Zurak Cancer Foundation Surveys Agbobloshie Market

Our cervical cancer team visited the Agbobloshie Market to conduct a survey for our upcoming market invasion. This will enable to the team to develop a strategy for our market invasion initiative. The market invasion initiative is a cervical cancer awareness program to provide cervical cancer education and screening to market women. This initiative is expected to encourage the market women to pay attention to their health especially the human papillomavirus; the causative virus for cervical cancer. According to Wikipedia, the local economy of Agbogbloshie is based on an onion market serving immigrants to Accra from the greater Tamale Region (Dagbani) in the north. Unemployed immigrants turned to scrap metal collection, including auto scrap, to supplement incomes. The population of Agbogbloshie consists of economic migrants from northern and rural parts of Ghana, where living standards are growing worse, causing people to move to urban settings, such as Agbogbloshie. Peace & Reconciliation Plenary Session & Closing Ceremony

For the last day of the One Young World Summit, we had the opportunity to listen to individuals promoting peace and reconciliation in Columbia and across the world. Sergio Londoño Zurek, Mayor of Cartagena, Colombia & Director General of the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation of Colombia, APC-Colombia shared his story on how he formed part of the peaceful negotiaition between the government of Columbia t he rebels. It was an inspiring moment to listen to young individuals in Columbia leading the development processes in the country. The next session featured the future of Columbia where individuals who played active role during the peace process between the government and FARC guerrilla. The session was hosted by Angela Anzola High Commissioner for Peace and Victims, Colombia with panelist such as Daniel Duque-Velásquez, who was part of a social movement that supported the process and demanded a political solution of armed conflict. Zurak Cancer Foundation Storms Madina Market On 3rd Anniversary

Zurak Cancer Foundation held another market invasion at Madina Market to commemorate its 3rd Anniversary. The aim of the event seeks to interact with Market Women and educate them about cervical cancer. It is part of Zurak Cancer Foundation's motive to increase awareness about the disease in order to encourage early detection since most of the cancers detected in Ghana are always at stage 4 which is very bad. Moreover, most of the individuals who expressed interest in the initiative were the head porters (Kayayei) and Zurak Cancer Foundation has started working on a module to develop more initiatives to reach out to the Kayayei.

Zurak Cancer Foundation Invades Nima Market

January is the awareness month for cervical cancer. Zurak Cancer Foundation invaded the Nima Market to educate market women on cervical cancer as part of its awareness program for the month. Ghana has an estimated population of 8.57 millions women ages 15 years and older who are at risk of developing cervical cancer. The current estimates indicate that every year 3,052 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 1,556 die from the disease. Cervical cancer ranks as the 1st most frequent cancer among women in Ghana and the 1st most frequent cancer among women between 15 and 44 years of age. Moreover, this is due to the prevalence rate of the unknown causative virus for cervical cancer called the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Also, cervical cancer is detected at a latter stage in Ghana due to lack of awareness and regular screening for the disease.
